Why
Varied concert repertoire
We have a diverse and challenging repertoire ranging from baroque to recently commissioned pieces. Our concerts are often supported by a professional orchestra and are held at various quality venues including the RNCM. We work with excellent soloists, again often professional, who frequently return to sing with us as they appreciate our musicianship and well-organised concerts. View details of our concerts.
Vocal training
In addition to our weekly rehearsals, we hold vocal coaching workshops to help our singers further develop their skills. These are led by our Music Director Steven Roberts or by other music coaching professionals.
Enjoyable
Our rehearsals are held in a happy, sociable atmosphere. Many friendships are formed at tea break or puzzling over a tricky entry. We have regular tours, enjoying a weekend of socialising and singing at attractive venues, for example Carlisle Cathedral and Hexham Abbey. As a member of ACS, you can look forward to belonging to a well organised, friendly choir and a thoroughly enjoyable musical environment!

Voice Assessments
After attending several rehearsals and when you are sure that we are the right choir for you, please complete our application form available from the Membership Secretary. You will then be invited to a private voice assessment with the Music Director, either immediately before or after a Monday rehearsal. It will not take long!
You will be asked to sing a prepared piece of your own choice (song, hymn tune, aria, oratorio aria, musical theatre or pop song, or part of one of the pieces we are currently rehearsing) which shows your ability and has a voice part independent of the piano. Please bring a copy for yourself and one for the Music Director.
You may be asked to sing some scales and arpeggios to assist in allocating your voice part if you are not sure where you should sing.
Although a good standard of sight reading is desirable, a willingness to practise at home and use learning materials where available is encouraged.
After the voice assessment, if appropriate you will be accepted as a full member of the choir.
We are not looking for a perfect musician, but someone who is dedicated to being part of the team and supporting the choir in all its aspects. All singers have different strengths and attributes and it is a combination of these which are assessed.
